These Halloween ELA Activities are perfect for your middle school classroom.
Do you have ELA Halloween plans? Sometimes even a few short activities are enough to make your classroom feel a little festive.
Check out this activity your kids will love: a figurative language color by number pumpkin. Carving a jack-o’-lantern in your classroom is probably out of the question, but this activity is a fun way to add some holiday cheer to any school day.
How to use the color by number
To use this activity, follow a few easy steps. First, print out the puzzles and clue sheets. This activity can be completed individually or in small groups. Next, collect the art supplies you will need. You can use crayons, colored pencils, or markers.
After you have all of the materials ready to go, your students will read each quotation and determine which type of figurative language is being used.
Finally, students will use the puzzle sheet as a guide for the pumpkin coloring page.
These completed pumpkins make a great classroom display for this time of year.

More Halloween ELA ideas
The spooky season might be a great time to read a dystopian novel. These books are often creepy and have elements of horror. My middle school students always love reading The Giver. To go along with any dystopian novel, I created a packet of ready to use activities here.
Also, read this blog post about ways I make dystopian literature relevant.
Another way to celebrate in your ELA classroom is to read a short story.
One Halloween favorite short story is “The Open Window” by Saki. This story combines humor and horror, and kids always love it.
